THE CHALLENGE
Transport systems across the Mediterranean are increasingly exposed to the impacts of climate change.
Flooding, extreme heat, sea-level rise, and other climate-related hazards are already affecting infrastructure, disrupting services, and increasing costs for economies and societies.
MURUNAMed is a regional initiative supporting Mediterranean Arab countries in strengthening the resilience of their transport systems to these challenges. The project focuses on raising awareness, improving knowledge, and laying the foundations for effective climate adaptation policies and actions.
Did you know “MURUNA” comes from the Arabic word مرونة, which means resilience, flexibility, or adaptability.
Flooding & storms
Threaten roads, railways, urban mobility networks, and ports.
Sea-level rise
Coastal erosion risks for seaports, airports, and coastal corridors.
Heatwaves
Pavement degradation, rail track buckling, and electrical damage.
Drought
Reduced navigability and pressure on electrified rail energy.
THE OBJECTIVES
MURUNAMed aims to:
- Raise awareness of climate risks affecting transport systems in the region
- Provide a clear, evidence-based overview of current adaptation challenges and gaps
- Support public authorities, transport operators, other private actors in the transport sector and research and training centers in understanding and addressing climate impacts
- Promote cooperation and knowledge exchange across countries and institutions
- Contribute to more resilient, sustainable, and future-proof transport systems
THE ACTIVITIES
To achieve these objectives, the project will:
- Develop a regional report on the status of transport adaptation to climate change
- Map key stakeholders and existing initiatives across the region
- Analyse gaps and opportunities for improving resilience
- Organise awareness-raising events
- Engage with expert networks and international organisations
- Disseminate knowledge through publications, events, and digital channels
THE EXPECTED RESULTS
The project will deliver:
- Increased awareness among policymakers and transport stakeholders
- A shared understanding of climate risks and adaptation priorities
- Strengthened dialogue and cooperation across Mediterranean countries
- Practical insights to support future policy development and investment
- A foundation for further capacity-building and implementation activities
Geographical scope
MURUNAMed focuses on Mediterranean Arab countries, including:
Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, and Tunisia, and will assess the feasibility of extending the focus to other Eastern Mediterranean Countries.
